NZ National Championship Feature 30 laps | Grid 3 | Finished 6th |
Got upside down on the first hot lap... not a good start! Was allowed to run the 2nd lap after everyone else had finished and redeemed ourselves with 3rd fastest time (14.142 seconds). The top 6 positions in 3 groups were inverted so we were on grid 6 for our heat race. The top 4 in each heat automatically qualified for the feature, with the rest having to do a B Main (we qualified). The dashes were for odds and evens grid positions in the feature. We were in the odd dash so finishing 2nd gave us grid 3 for the feature. In the early laps of the feature we dropped back to 4th on a very rough track. Scott bided his time while other cars either crashed out or dropped out from engine trouble. By lap 9 he was promoted to 2nd position when the two lead cars Lance Beale and Brad Mosen made a spectacular synchronised crash without contact on the ground but smashing in mid-air. On lap 10 Scott took the lead by taking the high line around team mate Shaun Insley. Scott lead the race until lap 23 when the car bounced off the ground and hit the rev limiter, then landed running only on 3 cylinders. No choice now but to chug around the gutter but still managing to hold onto the lead. On lap 28 a rut caught us out and Shaun got the pass. On the last run of the back straight the drive shaft gave up and all forward drive was lost. Scott tried to keep the car rolling as straight as possible but didn't think he would make the finish until Tony Fabish crashed into the back of him, giving us enough momentum to cross the line in 6th (last!) place. In Scott's words "This is by far the most disappointing race of my entire motor sport career". So close and yet so far!

Feature - 15 laps | Grid 10 | Finished 4th |
In heat one we got to 4th position rather quickly but on a restart Shane Alach in #11 spun out in front of us. Unable to avoid him the front of the car was damaged crashing into Shane and the rear end got beaten up by the rest of the field coming to join the crash. A few new parts got fitted out for the second heat, but we got another DNF due to a loose fuel line. The feature was a much better story however. We got through to 4th with a conservative drive, thinking about the NZ champs tomorrow night and not wanting to do any more damage.

Arrived on race day after a long drive to find Gisborne has a convex banked track. A few drivers had made the trip on Friday and had the advantage of the practice session. Unfortunately that wasn't practical for us and we were hoping to get some hot laps before the racing began. We were told in drivers briefing that that wasn't going to happen so the first heat was our first chance to learn. The learning curve meant clipping the pole line curb a couple of times and losing a spot each time. Disappointing results.

Very good results in both international test races for Scott, and the New Zealanders had a convincing overall win with NZ on 201 points to USA's 189 points.
After a bit of a struggle in the early laps of the 50 lap feature race, on lap 17 a tangle with Graham Standring sent Scott to the rear of the field. 19 of the original 25 cars remained at this stage and Scott gradually moved up to position 9 by lap 39. Then disaster stuck... another tangle, this time with team mate Shaun Insley sent Scott to the infield and our race was over.

Finally, good heat results and a promising grid position for the "King of the Springs" 40 lapper. Well that's what we thought until turn 2... where Scott spun out onto the grass. Momentum kept him going but by the time he was back on the track he was at the rear of the field in 20th position. Not to be disgruntled, by lap 15, Scott had made it back to 7th position and stayed there till lap 31 where the car stalled avoiding a crash with Michael Pickens. Back to the rear of the field again but by now there were only 11 cars in the race. Loyet had been lapped and Michael Kendall's transponder not working for my laps results. Managed to move up 3 spots to finish 8th.

Scott hit a rut on lap 5 of his first heat and spun out. No restarts on heat races so DNF.
Three laps into the USA vs NZ test the right rear shock tower broke free from the chassis, possible caused from an accident at a previous meetng. Scott was called to the infield and gained another DNF. The NZ team went on to score 43 to USA's 35; exactly the same score as the first test so NZ now 16 point ahead.
A mad dash back to the Aggressor workshop in Mt Wellington, quick welding job and back in time to do another heat race, B Main and Feature - phew!

Heat 1 was bumped into the wall by Jerry Coons Jnr on the first lap resulting in 3 flat tyres and a broken bearing carrier.
Heat 2 managed to get to second place fairly quickly but spun out on the 5th lap going too fast into the corner.
The feature race was interesting with no one on grid 3 and Bryce Townsend deciding he was starting on grid 3 1/2 instead of 4 where he should have been. After a yellow on the first lap and a complete restart from original grids the feature when green to chequered flag 20 laps on a slick dusty track.

Another night without a feature race for the midgets. This time due to insufficient time and a hectic race schedule with midgets, F2 midgets, kiwi kids, sprint cars, the TQ north island championships, and a showing of classic midgets thrown in for good measure!

This was a drawn out meeting with the Springs trying to get the meeting in between rain showers but by the end of the night the track was a mess and the feature races cancelled. The first heat was awesome with Scott quickly gaining the lead from Shane Snooks who started on grid 1 and keeping the current NZ champion Michael Pickens at bay for the remainder of the race. Heats 3 and 4 were run at the same time as a 22 car heat race and results for the individual heats were not reported. However Scott passed 9 cars to finished 13 so it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out he would have finished in a pretty good position if it was a normal 12 car heat.
1st Heat 12 laps | Grid 5 | DNF |
2nd Heat 12 laps | Grid 7 | DNF |
Feature 25 laps | Grid 17 | DNF |
The first heat was not a good start, and we lost a couple of places to Shane Alach and Graeme Standing on the first lap. On the 2nd lap Scott caught Shane's wheel going around pine tree bend and spun himself out.
The 2nd heat was a better start, and we got to 5th by the end of lap 1. On the 7th lap it was Micheal Pickens' turn to spin out and we lost all speed trying to avoid the carnage; another DNF.
Not to be disheartened we had high hopes for the feature, and the plan was to follow Michael through the field to the front! The plan was working well and by the 9th lap we were up to 13th, but then more carnage. Shaun Insley caught his tyre in a rut and bounced sideways into Scott's path. Scott bounced off Insley and into Wayne Green whose nerf bars caught Scott's exhaust, bending them skyward! (Check out the photo in the Gallery). Although we seemed to scrape through and continued to drive, the engine wouldn't work with the blocked exhaust and Scott drove into the infield - game over. Scott is still proving he can move forward in his heat races tonight. The 2nd heat was another spectacular race. The last two laps were raced practically side by side with Graham Standring, with Scott scooping up the win on the final corner. The feature race proved a bit tougher and after gaining one place in the first lap there was no more progress. The 5th was gained after Bryce Townsend was relegated 2 places by the officials. It was a very slick track and not wanting to risk tyre blow-out Scott played it safe. Check My Laps for full results of the feature race.

Scott had another couple of great heat races tonight. Scott was 2nd over the finish line in the 2nd heat but was awarded the 1st after Shane Alach was relegated 2 places by the officials. The feature race was a nail biter! Scott spent most of the race in 3rd position, dropping to 4th in lap 11. He was back to 3rd by lap 15 and held on till lap 20 when he was passed by Brad Mosen. No podium tonight but the results have placed Scott in 2nd position in the Western Springs Championship Series.

It looks like racing in the USA has paid off for Scott with a brilliant result for round 1 of the National Midget Championship Series. Scott recons it feels good to get back on the podium and hopes this will be the beginning of a trend.
